Filed Under (The Cereal Files) by Julie on 04-04-2008

I feel it might be prudent to add a quick disclaimer to this post.  Any blog post that I have written past 10:00pm on any given night might, just might, be a little sillier than usual based on my inability to think about anything of serious substance past that time.  Consider yourself warned!

My name is Julie and I am a cereal addict.  No, not just an addict but a downright cereal fiend.  What is the one food/drink that you absolutely would not, could not, ever possibly dream of being without?  Do you have one?  Well cereal is mine.

I really don’t know where exactly my love for cereal came from but I know I’ve had it for breakfast every day ever since I was a kid.  Of course there was always the occasional pancakes, waffles, french toast sticks, whatever… but those were rare and I always ate too much and felt sick.  My good old stand by, go-to breakfast, the one that stole my heart years ago… has always been my cereal.

There’s a commercial out there for Jimmy Dean Breakfast Bowls, actually there are quite a few, but there is one that has now become my favorite commercial ever because it is me… to a T.  Here it is:

You need Flash Player 8 to view this site. Get it now.

I think the reason I can relate so much to the cloud is not only because of my love of cereal, but also because I love cloudy days, always have.  So you can imagine my thrill when I first saw the commercial.  I like to recite it to my husband in the mornings… “It’s a cloud thing, you wouldn’t understand.”

You might be wondering which cereal, out of the 100’s available, is my favorite.  That’s the beauty of it all.  I have no one single favorite!  There are so many different types that I love for different reasons.  Oh, and check this out:  When I was pregnant, I started mixing 3-4 different cereals at a time!  I was eating these crazy combinations of Cap’n Crunch, Cookie Crisp, Corn Pops, Lucky Charms, Life, Honey Bunches of Oats, etc.

Now that I look back, I’m sure my daughter was bouncing off my uterine walls every morning!!  It’s interesting though.  Cereal combos have actually stuck with me since pregnancy, although I only mix two at a time now.  My current recipe calls for a nice bottom layer of Frosted Flakes with a serving of Frosted Mini Wheats on top (tons of protein in those little guys!).

You might be thinking, “um, and you are losing weight how?”  Well, let’s just say that I’ve tried to kick the habit and do something new for breakfast.  I often wonder what it would be like to wake up and eat my Quaker Weight Control Oatmeal that is sitting in the pantry.  I fantasize about a nice fruit and yogurt parfait or some yummy granola, or even some eggs.  But when it comes right down to it, I have realize that I’m allowed to be stubborn and set in my ways sometimes.  I am responsible for my choices now and dang it, my cereal is here to stay!

So, with that being said, I will leave you with this article I read in Women’s Health the other day.  It discusses sugar and all the little places it is snuck into the food we eat and all the different names it goes by.  One example that I was surprised to see was the 2 grams of sugar in one serving of sweet peas.  I mean, yeah, they are called “sweet” peas but that much sugar, really?  If anything could seriously make me reconsider my cereal habit, this article could.  (But don’t count on it…)

Here’s the article: Sugar Overload

Ok, I’m a not a cereal addict but I think after reading this and the article in Women’s Health that I could be sugar addict. Maybe if we take it out of all the hidden places then we can enjoy it as a dessert, again. I guess it would be interesting to try to at least write down for a week how many sugar grams I actually eat and then find a reasonable goal to reduce those. A good thought. . .
