RunnersI’m taking the plunge into uncharted territory!  Something I never dreamed of doing in a million years, something so far beyond what I ever imagined for myself, yet something so very representative of my new way of life.  I’m signing up for my first 5k run!  Holy moly!  I know!  (If you are fan of the show Friends, just imagine Monica screaming, I know! and you’ll understand how I’m saying it!)

So my race (because now that I’m joining, it is, of course, my race) is on July 26th in Asheville, NC at what is known as Bele Chere.  It’s a fun street festival that we’ve been to before, and yet somehow I never knew about the race.  (Too busy stuffing my face with funnel cake?  Perhaps.)  The last time we attended Bele Chere, it was a very hot day.  Luckily the smart people that set these things up have the run scheduled for 8:00 am.  Here is some basic info on the run.

I am so super excited about committing to this run!  I ran for 13 minutes straight this morning and it wasn’t too bad.  I’m learning that running is much more a mental game then I ever knew.  (I plan to write about that at a later date because there’s a lot behind that mental game.)  This will give me the perfect opportunity and motivation to increase my running times and actually start to “train”.  (Okay, seriously, there are parts of me inside that jump with glee when I refer to myself as a “runner” or someone who is “training” for a “race”!!)

If you don’t mind, I’d like to be accountable to you.  I’m really looking forward to this and I will keep you posted on my training.  (Really, I’m giggling inside at that!)

That’s great news. When I was doing C25K I signed up for my first one and it was a blast. I just did my second one on Sunday and it was even more of a blast!

Wow… congrats on setting your goal. Running has always intimidated me… but, it sounds like you’ve got the right frame of mind… I heard if you do it in small increments, you’ll get there! So YOU GO!

You will be hooked in no time to races because it takes the focus off of losing weight and instead you focus on getting stronger and faster. I will be returning to medical school at ETSU in July and am thinking of running this race as well….then stuffing my face with funnel cake. I LOVE BELE CHERE!! I have been in MN for the past two years and have missed Bele Chere and Asheville :)
