VacationHow do your vacations usually effect your weight loss?  Is it hard for you to stay on track?  Do you take a diet break?  Does going out of town throw your routine out of whack?  I’ve grappled with these questions before and gone into some trips very unprepared for what temptations are out there.  In the past, I have completely stopped my diet and ate whatever my heart desired.  I’ve had other times where I’ve done ok being out of my routine and managed to eat healthy and get some exercise.

Fighting temptation while on vacation can be a tricky thing.  We are going to Disneyworld in a few weeks and how I will handle myself while there is definitely something I am considering.  I decided to do some research and find some tips from the experts to help me have a plan and a better idea of how to be successful on vacation.  (You mean I can’t eat a churro!?

This article from Diet & Body has tips for the different types of vacations people take.  Road trips, staying with friends or family, airport tips, and advice on returning to your routine when you get back home.

I really like this post from Maria’s Last Diet.  It goes into some of the things you might not think about, such as bringing your successful diet strategies with you (especially the mental ones), not trying to be perfect the entire time, going with the flow, and how to make adjustments as necessary.  Practical tips to help keep you on track.

This article from MedicineNet describes several other strategies that you can use while out and about, such as watching those restaurant portions!

Lastly, I really enjoyed these realistic tips from Jillian Michaels of The Biggest Loser.  You can tell that these are tips she uses herself and that they really work.  I love the idea of ordering chicken fajitas and substituting the rice and beans with a salad.  Bravo!

I hope these can help you on your next vacation!  I’ll let you know how I do in the world of Disney!  (Seriously, NO churros?!)

Be sure to pass up the McDonald’s French Fry stand for the fruit stand. :) Apples are a buck, I think. I would also carry some of your favorite snacks with you, so you won’t be tempted! That helped me a lot.

I am certainly one to eat whatever I want when I vacation. I just got back from one and then resolved to get better. And then I got a virus and got sick. blah.

This is the time I am always “off” so I think it doesn’t count. And I wonder why I come back 7 lbs. heavier. I have a hard time limiting particular foods, but if I limit portion size and make sure I don’t overeat, I always feel better when I get home.

Thanks for the tips ladies. Those will help quite a bit! I’m hoping that all the walking we’ll do will help offset any splurging. I mean it IS vacation, right?! :)

I hope you are feeling better Amanda!
