First, my breathing is loud! I got up super early and was out the door at 6:00am. It was very calm and peaceful outside. That is, until I started running! All I could hear was the sound of my own breathing! Apparently the loud drone of my treadmill had conveniently blocked it out for me at home. I was seriously thinking, my goodness, I am going to wake up everyone in the neighborhood! Does anybody else notice this?! (Note to self: Learn to breath quieter!)
My next perception was that I was running slower than I do on the treadmill and I felt like a slug slowly chugging down the street. But because this was my first time, I was trying to keep a steady pace and not overdo it. I had no idea what the distance was that I ran or at what speed, but my goal was to run for 30 minutes straight, which I was able to do. What did I notice next? I missed my treadmill gadgets! Like the timer telling me how much running I have done, my speed monitor, and my heart rate monitor! Some people might feel liberated being away from all those things but not me, I love keeping track of all of them. I did, however, find that I was more able to focus on my surroundings and be more “in the moment“, so to speak. That brings me to my last difference. Being out in the cool morning air, watching the deer scatter into the trees as I run by (okay, they probably heard me coming a mile away), feeling my feet pound the pavement, and just knowing that I was now one of “those” people that I had always envied, all made this a really cool experience. I felt brave venturing out of the house and actually running in front of people (okay deer… but I felt like the whole neighborhood was awake and secretly watching me out their windows!). It was a wonderful feeling just to conquer another first. That alone made it worth it.

I think I definitely run slower outside than on the treadmill…I know we’re having these “differences” in common..so recently I found that if I run on the treadmill with about a 2.0 incline, it kind of feels like the resistance of running outside.

I wouldn’t worry about the breathing! Just think of all the fresh clean air you’re breathing in! Well done on the run! It’s nice to challenge those comfort zones, isn’t it?

I found it harder to run outside (different terrain, slopes etc.). I am probably one of the few people who prefer the treadmill.

congrats on your outdoor run! I’m glad you are now “one of those people” … I know exactly what you mean by that phrase, and that’s cool you accomplished that!

Congratulations. There’s nothing like the idea of breathing the fresh air while exercising outside. I love it………..:)

Ran across you in “bloggy world” and wanted to say… So great about your outdoor run! Your breathing will get better, your speed will increase, and you’ll be “one of those people” trotting down the street with your cute jogging outfit. Also, I’m not sure if you know of the Nike+ system. It plugs right into your iPod nano and keeps track of your mileage & pace. It’ll tell you how far you’ve gone while you’re running, what your pace is, and how long you’ve been running. If you don’t have an iPod nano you can still use the system with Nike’s bracelet. I promise i’m not a salesperson for this, but I got one for my birthday and, like you, missed my gadgets. This is awesome! You can also challenge other’s online as that is where you track your miles. It’s really cool and I get encouragement to get off my bootie and run! Glad i ran across another “runners” website! Post a comment
