Filed Under (Lessons Learned, Weight Loss) by Julie on 05-29-2008
I’ve not been patient with my weight loss or motivated to do much. I am most definitely a hardcore creature of habit. Does any watch the Big Bang Theory? Okay, that is seriously one of my favorite shows now. It’s right up there with The Office and Survivor (my top two all time favs). So if you are familiar with the Big Bang Theory… I can simply illustrate my point about being a creature of habit by describing myself as Sheldon. I’m grinning right now because some people are probably cringing at the thought. But it’s true, right down to eating cereal on the same spot on the couch every morning, watching the same show every morning while I eat it, and not wanting to really talk to anyone until I’m done. Yep, my hubby totally agrees that Sheldon and I are one.
Don’t worry. I’m back to my old self now. I’m still running, eating well, and hanging in there. I’m also praying for moderation, balance, and for freedom from instant gratification. It all kinda goes hand in hand I think. As far as the Upday Downday Diet goes, it just wasn’t for me. I actually did lose a couple pounds in the week I was on it but I was not a happy camper on the down days. I found myself taking naps while my daughter napped just to pass the time while I starved. I had actually found some pretty good ways to maximize 500 calories (oatmeal and chicken broth mainly) but when you are dreading every other day, it just isn’t worth it. The other downside was that I couldn’t run on the down days, nor could I deal with making dinner for everyone else, or watching any kind of shows about food. I became very high maintenance! I’m still fascinated by calorie shifting though! The article that Rebecca mentioned from Scale Junkie about “calorie cycling” is very informative. She did a lot of research on the topic and through all of her research of different diet plans, they all had one thing in common: do not go any lower than 1,000 calories in a day. Interesting. My conclusion with this experience is that I will still play with my calories and vary the amount that I eat on a daily basis but, I will not be dropping below 1,000. Thanks to everyone for not chastising me during my week of temporary insanity!

You know I was just thinking about your diet and trying it because oh lordy am I in a funk (as you already know) AND I’ve hit the plateau for the trillionth time. But thanks I won’t try the up/down diet…actually what do you think about the special K? like eating cereal for breakfast and lunch? I love the napping part, I’ve always said sleep has so many benefits like not being hungry or bored which are the main problems I have being a SAHM and all

I forgot to mention, I seriously think that we should really have lived closer…I think we are SO similar - we could sit around bitching about weight AND go exercising together…I really have no workout partner

I decided to give it a try. I’m on my first “DownDay” today and it’s been tough….but not because I’m all that hungry. Despite limiting myself to 500 calories today I’ve been very controlled, but my MIND is telling me to eat. Even though I’m slowly regaining my will power, I still have a food obsession…..I just love food. All that said, I’m not too sure if 500-calorie days are smart or not. I did feel a teensy bit light-headed early today and then crashed for about 2 hours early this afternoon (right around lunch time). That can’t be very healthy. Off to read more…. Thanks!

Jojo, heck yeah I wish we lived closer! It would be nice to have someone to run with and you’re right, we would get along great (already do!)! Yeah, napping. I wish I could do it everyday! Mexico has the right idea with the siesta. As far as the Special K diet goes… it has definitely tempted me! Cereal twice a day? YUM! And I love their strawberry waffles. I think it would be cool to do that diet a few days a week but I would probably get burnt out on it pretty quick. Have you tried it or thought about it?

Hope, My issue was sorta different because my stomach would be growling and I was just so hungry. It would have been easier to not think about the food if my body wasn’t constantly reminding me that I wanted it. That’s where napping came in. But I can definitely relate to the food obsession. Also, I drank those advantedge shakes on two of my dd’s and wow… all I got from them was sleepy, a headache, and even hungrier. I think everyone’s bodies respond differently to such a drop in calories and perhaps that’s why some people can do it successfully. Make sure and keep me updated!

I’m definitely thinking about it and gave it a trial run today, I had little snacks in between but cereal pretty much kept me ok/full until dinner. I don’t think I will stick to only Special K though, I think any kind of cereal is ok

I, too, get a bit cranky when my body isn’t getting enough energy in the form of calories. I am learning to listen to my body.

I almost tried this one… it just doesn’t seem authentically healthy to be waiting for your next up day. I don’t know… I’m glad it works for some! It’s funny how you say you’re a creature of habit… I am totally NOT… I’m so jealous that you are. I wish I had more of that… I hate it if two days are the same in a row… Hence, why I change everything so much! Oh well… that’s what makes us who we are, right?
